Hiking in Styria

This tour takes us right through the Gesäuse, Austria's youngest national park. From the Mödlinger Hütte at the foot of the Reichenstein, the hiking trail goes via the mountaineering village of Johnsbach to the Heßhütte, probably the most important refuge in the Gesäuse due to its location. Heinrich Heß, who gave the hut its name and is regarded as the person who opened up the Gesäuse mountains, was also one of the initiators of the construction of a hut below the Hochtor peak, as at that time the rush of mountaineers, especially from Vienna, increased so enormously that the existing hay store on the nearby Stadelfeldalm was no longer sufficient as a shelter.

Through sparse larch forests and through the narrow, gloomy Notgasse, the trail leads us via the Brandalm to the Viehbergalm, a small, beautifully situated alpine village with several managed huts. Particularly well-known and popular is Marianne Gruber's Ritzingerhütte, which spoils hikers as well as mountain bikers with its homemade Steirerkrapfen. Over the Hochmühleck, a beautifully situated panoramic mountain, and through dense forests, this rather long stage leads downhill to Bad Mitterndorf in the Ausseerland Salzkammergut region.

This traditional hiking trail leads from Ramsau Ort to the alpine pasture region at the foot of the Dachstein. This hike can also be combined with public transport: either take the bus to Türlwand and walk back down to Ramsau Ort or do it the other way around. 

The highlights of this tour range from crossing the highest elevation on the eastern edge of the Alps, the Stuhleck, to crossing Austria's largest contiguous forest area, Peter Rosegger's forest home in the Fischbacher Alps. Also crossing a unique alpine pasture area around Teichalm and Sommeralm, to crossing the Niedere Tauern on the Schladminger Tauern Höhenweg. Attention: The section through the Bärenschützklamm ravine is closed due to a rockfall! The ravine can be bypassed via the hiking trail leading north of it, from the restaurant Zum guten Hirten to Mautstatt.

Die Tour durch die Waldheimat im Nordosten der Steiermark - auf Teilstücken des Mariazeller Weges 06, der von Eibiswald im Süden der Steiermark in den berühmten Wallfahrtsort im Norden der Steiermark verläuft, und auf einem Abschnitt des Zentralalpenweges 02, der Österreich von Hainburg an der Donau bis Feldkirch in Vorarlberg durchquert -  führt uns auf die Spuren eines der bekanntesten Dichter Österreichs, Peter Rosegger. Aufgrund der zahlreichen Sehenswürdigkeiten und Stationen empfehlen wir die Tour auf zwei bis drei Tagesetappen aufzuteilen. Einerseits um in die Heimat dieses großen Österreichers so richtig eintauchen, und andererseits um auch die genussreichen Stationen entsprechend auskosten zu können.
