Nebelhorn - Hindelanger via ferrata - Giebelhaus
The Hindelang via ferrata is the longest and most demanding via ferrata in the Allgäu. It runs along the rugged grade between Nebelhorn and Grosse Daumen. Via the Gündlesalpe, the Käseralpe and the Engeratsgundalpe we descend to the Giebelhaus. A fantastic panoramic tour with views of the Allgäu Alps.

Distance 9.7 km
The Hindelanger via ferrata, which runs for 5 km on the highly exposed grade between Nebelhorn and Gro;em Daumen, is secured with almost 1 km of wire rope and about 100 m of ladders. Three emergency exits in a southerly direction via the Koblat make it possible to get out early if your condition decreases or the weather deteriorates, whereby the difficulty of the via ferrata increases after the emergency exits. At the end of the tour, a wonderful descent awaits us via the large slopes of the Gündlesalpe, the Käseralpe and the Engeratsgundalpe (managed) to the Giebelhaus (also managed).

The via ferrata should only be climbed by experienced mountaineers or with a mountain guide. Despite good securing by ropes and ladders, there are some unsecured rock passages to negotiate (I, II). The length and exposure of the route require good concentration and fitness, as well as a head for heights. There are three emergency exits in a southerly direction. Via ferrata routes are particularly vulnerable to lightning strikes and should therefore only be climbed in good weather. Caution is also advised when it is wet - danger of slipping!Tips and hints

Turn-by-turn directions
The Hindelang via ferrata starts a few metres away from the top station of the Nebelhorn cable car on the 2224 m high summit. Here we can enjoy the magnificent view before we set off. The climb begins with a 10 m high ladder and then continues along the 5 km long north-east ridge, which breaks off vertically to the north towards the Retterschwang valley and then gently descends to the Koblat plateau in the south (emergency exits). Through easier terrain, interrupted by some shorter climbing passages, we reach the 2235 m high Western Wengenkopf, the way back to the Eastern Wengenkopf becomes more demanding. Several ladders, rock crevices and an exposed, unsecured ridge follow until we finally reach the second summit of the Wengenköpfe at 2207 m above sea level. On our way to the Big Thumb we climb another tower at a lofty height and then follow an easy path over a grassy slope to the summit of the Big Thumb. After enjoying the panoramic view of the summit, we continue along the path for a short distance in the direction of Kleiner Daumen, but before reaching the summit we turn off in the direction of Engeratsgundsee. We circle the mountain lake three quarters of the way round and then turn left at a sharp angle onto a hiking trail. This leads us parallel to the Gündlesbach stream down the valley, passing first the Gündlesalpe and then the Käseralpe and finally arriving at the managed Engeratsgundalpe. Here we turn left and hike on to the Giebelhaus, where we can stop for a bite to eat before the bus takes us to Hinterstein. From Hinterstein we take public transport via Bad Hindelang and Sonthofen back to our car park at the valley station of the Nebelhorn cable car.
