· Eifel
Grandiose views of the volcanoes of the Eastern Eifel, unique insights into the history of the formation of the fire-breathing mountains - an enjoyable journey into the time of the stone industry.
easy
Distance 6.6 km
Highlights:
Ettringen Bellberg with fantastic views of the volcanic landscape, Kottenheimer Winfeld mine landscape, "Sieben Stuben" crater caves.
From the Hochsimmerhalle in Ettringen, the first section is a relaxed walk through Ettringen. A narrow meadow path leads up to the summit of the Ettringen Bellberg. A fantastic view of the volcanoes of the Eastern Eifel rewards the ascent. Along the western crater rim, the trail descends to the southern crater breakthrough (a detour to the quarries of the Ettringer Lay is worthwhile here). Via the southern lava flow, the trail reaches the forest of the Kottenheimer Büden. At the foot of the impressive cinder wall are the "Sieben Stuben", small caves where people sought shelter during the Second World War. The route continues up to the south-eastern rim of the crater. Here a magnificent view opens up into the Bellberg quarry and onto the volcanoes Hochsimmer, Bellberg, Sulzbusch and Hochstein. The following passage leads steeply downhill over paved and natural paths into the Kottenheim Winfeld, an idyllic mine landscape with many relics from the times of basalt mining. The trail continues towards Ettringen past the "Junker Schilling" rock monument, then crosses a stream and comes across the Hartborn mineral spring. The trail leads back to the starting point in a relaxed manner.
