In order to reach the Razor Mountain pasture you have to overcome a gentle ascend from the Podkuk Mountain pasture. During the summer months you will come across curious cattle watching the numerous hikers passing by. The majority of hikers are headed to the hospitable mountain hut on the Razor Mountain pasture where you have numerous options to continue your tour. Your decision here will be quite difficult due to the wonderful environment surrounding the mountain hut. One of your options is to ascend to Mt. Vogel. The marked trail will initially take you through a thin forest and will then ascend along a long crossing trail with several intermediate bends across a barren land to a well visible mountain pass between Mt. Vogel and Mt. Žabijski Kuk. This extremely scenic trail will reward you with magnificent views immediately after you reach the top of the ridge along the crossing trail across the slope beneath Mt. Vogel. An even better reward awaits you on Mt. Vogel where you will be able to enjoy in views of all of the peaks from Mt. Črna prst past Mt. Rodica to Mt. Šija to the east, past Mt. Meja and Mt. Vrh nad Škrbino to Mt. Tolminski Kuk to the west and all the way to the kingdom of Mt. Triglav to the north. If the weather is clear you can also enjoy in views all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

Author’s recommendation

On your return to the starting point it is well worth to take a walk from the mountain pass beneath Mt. Vogel to Mt. Žabijski Kuk. This ascend will prolong your tour for approximately 60 minutes.

Turn-by-turn directions

Follow the markings for Mt. Vogel. from the Razor Mountain pasture and at all junctions. Before you reach the mountain pass between Mt. Vogel and Mt. Žabijski Kuk (approx. 50 m below), start following a well visible trail crossing the southern slope of Mt. Vogel to the south. When you reach the ridge, continue to the left until you reach the highest point. Return from the top to the sign on the mountain pass where the trails from the Bohinj area join the trails from Mt. Vogel. Follow the trail to Mt. Vogel. Descend from Mt. Vogel along a well-worn marked trail along the ridge towards southeast. When you reach the mountain pass with a turn towards Mt. Žabijski Kuk, turn downhill to the right towards the Razor Mountain pasture and further to your starting point on the Podkuk mountain pasture.

Public transport

There is no public transportation to the starting point.

By road

In the town of Tolmin, start following the regional road towards the village of Most na Soči. Turn left at the junction with the sign for Ljubinj and continue through the village of Poljubinj to the village of Ljubinj. When you reach the end of the village, follow the signs pointing left towards the Stador and Razor Mountain pastures. The road is narrow and in somewhat bad condition at some sections. Nevertheless it is drivable to the Podkuk Mountain pasture (the sign occasionally says Kuk). You will reach the Podkuk Mountain pasture from the Stador mountain pasture along a gravel road with several steep ascends and descends, which is why it requires an experienced driver.

Parking

Parking is available at the parking lot in front of the Podkuk Mountain Pasture.

Equipment

This hiking trail is also routed over rocky terrain, which is why it requires good footwear with well-profiled soles. Hikers who like to use trekking poles will find such equipment very useful.

There is no water source along the trail from the mountain hut to the peaks above, which is why you have to bring a sufficient supply of water. This applies especially to the summer months.

Winter climbs to Mt. Vogel require complete winter equipment.
