Piz Lunghin forms an important junction in the geography of the Alps. At this point three water cuts meet, which direct the runoff of precipitation on three sides: eastward to the Danube, northward to the Rhine, and southward to the Po.

The route from Maloja to the lake, the pass and to Piz Lunghin is a well known and often frequented hike, on well-marked paths with views overlooking the Engadin. Those who wish to extend the hike can descend to Casaccia via the Septimer Pass. From the lake, experienced hikers can reach the peak of Piz Lunghin.

Author’s recommendation

From the lake it takes about 30 min to the watershed.

Safety information

The trail from the lake to the top of the Piz Lunghin is much more complicated than the previous ascent to the lake. There are some exposed sections and difficult passages. That is why it is marked as an alpine hiking trail (blue-white).

Turn-by-turn directions

The hiking route leaves the main road in Maloja between the Hotel Lunghin and the Protestant church. A signpost marks the footpath, which soon leads into a gravel road. This road ends at the nearby houses of Pila. You take up the footpath again, which turns to the right and leads in a  to a footbridge over the Inn.  This is where the actual ascent begins. The footpath winds its way up the slope until it reaches a shallow hollow. Here you cross the stream again (which later becomes the Inn River) and follow the last ascent over a ridge, behind which lies Lake Lunghin.

To get to the pass, follow the trail to the west.  It starts rather flat before it climbs up to the wide saddle of the pass.

The descent follows the same route.

To Piz Lunghin: After the rocky elevations above the lake, it is advisable to leave the main path and follow a marked track that gradually turns to the left along the line of a flattened moraine hill. You might cross some gentle snowfields along the way. When you reach the mountain flank, the ascent becomes significantly steeper. On the west ridge you meet the official white-blue trail tracks and follow them to the summit (2780 m). Downhill, it is better to follow the trail on the ridge to the saddle of the Lunghin Pass. The trail from the lake to the top of the Piz Lunghin is much more complicated than the previous ascent to the lake. There are some exposed sections and difficult passages.
