This mountain ridge, which is separating the Bohinj area from the Tolmin area, is truly wonderful and offers luxurious views from the Julian Alps all the way to the Adriatic Sea when the weather is fine. Because it is not very visited by mountaineers it offers everything a person needs nowadays – peace and intact nature.

This tour starts in the idyllic village of Tolminske Ravne, crosses the Kal (also Na Kalu) Mountain pasture, passes the stubby Mt. Tolminski Migovec and ascends to Mt. Tolminski Kuk. When you reach the top, you will notice a wonderful ridge to the west with a well-worn up-and-down trail. You can only avoid the ridge beneath Mt. Podrta gora. The ascent to this mountain is somewhat problematic for inexperienced mountaineers because it is routed along a very crumbly and rocky terrain. On the Škrbina notch, the trail descends a little down the northern side and embraces Mt. Vrh nad Škrbino. The beginning of the tour is easier because you can use iron clamps and the wire rope. On the top, you can enjoy in views from Lake Bohinj to the north all the way to the Adriatic Sea to the south.

From there, you only have to descend past the renowned Škrbinska plošča wall to the Razor Mountain pasture and further to Tolminske Ravne.

Author’s recommendation

There are no water sources along the trail, which is why you should bring a sufficient amount of water. From the orientation point of view, the tour is quite demanding in foggy weather, which is why you should only take it when the weather forecast is good.

Safety information

The tour is safe. The trail from the Škrbina notch to Mt. Vrh nad Škrbino is initially secured with wire ropes and somewhat exposed. We recommend vertiginous mountaineers to use the self-belay set.

This is a demanding and occasionally very demanding hiking trail. Use of hiking trails is at your own risk!

Tips and hints

Physically well-prepared mountaineers can continue the tour from Mt. Vrh nad Škrbino along the ridge to Mt. Meja and Mt. Rušnati vrh and finish the tour on the Globoko Mountain pass. This prolongs the tour for approx. 2 - 3 h.

You can also descend from the Razor Mountain pasture to Tolminske Ravne along a longer trail. This will prolong your tour for approximately 30 min.

Mt. Tolminski Kuk (2,085 m), Mt. Vrh nad Škrbino (2,054 m)

Turn-by-turn directions

Start in the village of Tolminske Ravne and follow the marked trail to the Razor Mountain pasture. When you pass the field gate at the end of the pasture, turn sharply uphill to the left and follow the marked trail to the Kal (Na Kalu) Mountain pasture. When you reach the last stable on the mountain pasture, you will notice the signs directing you to the left towards Mt. Tolminski Migovec. The trail is initially routed through dwarf pines, however, the terrain becomes rocky when you have to cross the area. When you overcome a quite long crossing trail, you will be faced with a somewhat unfriendly steep ascent across a rocky terrain which will take you to a mountain pass where you will be able to notice two trails. Trail to the right leads to the top of Mt. Tolminski Migovec, however, you should continue slightly to the left along an up-and-down trail through a wide dwarf pine area to a level section from where the trail to the top of Mt. Tolminski Kuk is marked with stone cairns. From the orientation point of view, the trail is undemanding, since your first destination is clearly visible. Follow the well-worn ridge trail from the top of Mt. Tolminski Kuk to Mt. Zeleni vrh and continue beneath Mt. Podrta gora to the Škrbina notch. From there, descends for a while and turn to the left onto a marked and initially secured trail to Mt. Vrh nad Škrbino. Descend from the top towards the south and continue along a well-worn trail (with steps at the beginning) to the Razor mountain pasture. From there, follow the markings along a "steep" trail to the starting point.
